IABG ( I ndustrie a nlagen- B etriebs g esellschaft mbH ) is a German analysis and test service company based in Ottobrunn near Munich . The company focuses on the automotive, aerospace and defense & security industries.

history

On February 7, 1961, representatives of the Federal Ministry of Defense and the industrial management company (IVG) met in Bonn to decide to found a company to operate a plant center. In March 1961, Federal Defense Minister Franz Josef Strauss approved the establishment, whereupon the new company finally started operations on June 1, 1961. Dr.-Ing. Klaus Kopfermann appointed. Kopfermann, a grandson of aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal , was previously a manager at Bölkow Developments KG . As a test and analysis center financed by the Federal Republic of Germany, IABG should be available to the entire German aviation industry as an industry-independent company.

An early major project in 1973 was the total cell fatigue test on the first Airbus model , the Airbus A300 . Large-scale tests on the European Ariane 5 rocket began in 1992 . In 1993 the company was privatized and is now run by its owners. One of the best-known projects is the total cell fatigue test on the Airbus A380 , which IABG carried out from 2004 to 2012 at the Dresden location . In 2019, IABG employed around 1,000 people at 12 German and international locations with a total turnover of 215.4 million euros.

On September 22nd, 2006, there was a serious accident at the Transrapid test facility in Emsland with 23 fatalities. In its role as the Transrapid operating company, IABG had to answer for this incident. The cause of the accident was human error.

In 2014, secret documents stolen by Edward Snowden revealed that the British secret service GCHQ had attempted to hack an IABG satellite ground station.

Automotive

In the automotive business area , the company offers test and development services for automobile manufacturers and suppliers. For this purpose, IABG operates a test center accredited according to current standards. The portfolio also includes the development and construction of test stands .

InfoCom

The InfoKom business area was created in 1989. The IABG plans, integrates and operates complex IT and communication systems to implementation and supports their life cycle. The range of services includes security concepts and cost models to optimize the security and profitability of IT systems.

Before its privatization, the company was involved in the drafting of three former German standard works on IT security . Specifically, these are the IT security criteria (ITSK) , the IT evaluation manual (ITEHB) and the IT security manual (ITSHB). The works appeared in 1989, 1990 and 1992. The successors of these works include the Common Criteria (published in 1996) and the IT Baseline Protection Manual published in 1994 .

Mobility, Energy & Environment

In the mobility business area, the company carries out .... on vehicle and traffic technology, driving dynamics, driving comfort and drive. The portfolio includes calculations on strength , dynamics and acoustics as well as structural tests on overall structures and components. In addition, the IABG is investigating the possibilities of transferring maglev technology to applications for private transport.

The Energy Business Area offers solutions for electromobility and the energy transition. The focus here is on the dismantling of nuclear power plants and the retrofitting of nuclear facilities, as well as the qualification and engineering of wind turbines.

In the environment business area, the company focuses on geodata and environmental engineering. In its geodata factory in Dresden, IABG determines and interprets spatial data, e.g. B. for surveying floodplains, mobile phone planning or for municipal cadastre.

The company tests aircraft and individual assemblies for their strength and service life. This includes service life and safety analyzes, test concepts and programs, test simulation, static load tests, durability tests on entire cells and partial structures, material testing and non-destructive testing. Important projects were the structural fatigue test on the Airbus A380 (2005–2012) and the structural fatigue test of the military transporter Airbus A400M (2011–2014) in Dresden, the service life extension tests on the A320 and the structural fatigue tests on the A350 XWB in Ottobrunn. In recent projects, IABG in Dresden carried out fatigue tests on the Bombardier C-Series and the Pilatus PC-24.

Space travel

In its space center coordinated by ESA, the company conducts qualification tests on launch vehicles such as the Ariane 5 upper stage and Vega , on satellites such as SWARM , LISA Pathfinder and Sentinel-2A, and other space projects such as the Solar Orbiter . This includes mechanical, thermal and acoustic tests, the determination of the mass properties and support services in engineering and quality management.

Defense & Security

In the Defense & Security business area, the company supports armed forces and their procurement projects. This includes solutions for protection and security issues, for prevention and reaction against dangers such as cyber terrorism and attacks on critical infrastructures .

In addition, the Bundeswehr Planning Office has a branch in the IABG buildings. From 2014 to 2017, Colonel i. G. Sönke Marahrens .

Ownership

With effect from January 1, 2010, SCHWARZ Holding GmbH (87.4% of the share capital) together with IABG Employee Participation AG (MBAG, 12.6% of the share capital) form the group of shareholders of IABG.
