iMovie is a non-linear video editing program for the operating systems macOS , iOS and iPadOS from Apple .

history

IMovie was introduced in 1997 as an application for classic Mac OS 8 . From 1999 it was included with a newly acquired iMac DV that had a FireWire interface. Version 3.x only ran under Mac OS X (now macOS ). Since iOS 4 , functionally reduced versions of iMovie have also been available for iPhone and iPad. With the iPhone 4 , an iPhone version of the program also came to the App Store . With the introduction of the iPad 2 , a version was also released for this.

The editing program iMovie is part of the so-called iLife package, which also contains the programs iPhoto , iDVD , iWeb and GarageBand and is supplied with every Mac . When Apple introduced the Mac App Store , iMovie from version 9 (iMovie '11) was also sold individually online.

In October 2013 it was announced that iMovie would from now on be upgradeable for free. Free installation is available on iOS devices purchased after September 1, 2013.

Functions

Since program version 5 (January 2005) the program can be used to cut video films in high definition format, which is why it was temporarily referred to as "iMovie HD". With the introduction of the newly developed program version 7 in August 2007 (iLife '08) this name addition was omitted again.

iMovie makes video effects available, for example to distort the image. More precise image corrections are possible using third-party plugins. The program also includes many ready-made transition and title effects. An essential feature for amateur filmmakers is the ability to stabilize shaky video recordings afterwards, which is accompanied by a certain cropping of the image.

From version 9 (iMovie '11), in addition to the thematically designed transition effects, a function for using pre-designed cinema film trailers based on Hollywood clichés, including fantasy studio trailers , movement effects and orchestral film music pieces, has been built in.

The program offers a simplified form of working with the green screen technology (iMovie '09 and '11), but no manual adjustment of the green threshold value is possible, as is the case with advanced video editing and effects programs. In iMovie '11, the option to use the last frame of a green screen clip as a reference for automatic adjustment has been added as an alternative.
