IPPOLIT

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hippolyte is a series of open source - chess programs . So far they have appeared under the following names (in chronological order):

  • IPPOLIT (published in May 2009)
  • RobboLito
  • Igorrit
  • IvanHoe
  • Fire

The programmers of the engines mostly work under pseudonyms, their identity is largely unclear.

In March 2010, Fire 1.2 was considered the most powerful chess program in the world for common PCs . In the meantime, Houdini and currently Komodo and Stockfish have taken this place.

However, the programs are not included in some computer chess rankings because it is assumed that they are clones of the formerly strongest commercial chess engine Rybka . In this context, Vasik Rajlich pointed out that in spring 2009 he had heard of "a kind of open source clone" of Rybka 3 and that the IPPOLIT source texts show that they are based on a decompiled version of Rybka. Rajlich cannot provide evidence without disclosing his own source code. The developers reply that the alleged clone is much more playful than the allegedly plagiarized original and also has a significantly greater functionality. Almost all of today's common chess programs are based on similar alpha-beta algorithms and a variety of ideas from older chess programs. The reason for the very different skill levels is due to the very effective expansions that were devised by various developers in later years and up to the present day.
