I Gusti Ngurah Rai (born January 30, 1917 in Desa Carangsari, Kabupaten Badung, Bali , † November 20, 1946 in Marga , Tabanan ) was an Indonesian military man. He is a national hero of Indonesia .

Life

Ngurah Rai was a lieutenant colonel in the Indonesian armed forces fighting for independence against the Dutch army .

Under his command, Balinese armed forces fought against the Dutch for independence until a battle broke out in which his troops were defeated from the start. The ritual self-sacrifice in fighting in a hopeless situation (Indonesian puputan ) is based on an old tradition. Together with him, fellow combatants were killed in this Battle of Marga in 1371.

The international airport of Bali, Bandar Udara Internasional Ngurah Rai is named after I Gusti Ngurah Rai .
