Ibrahim Jeilan ( Amharic ዕብራህም ጅእላን ጋሹ; born June 12, 1989 in Bale ) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner . His greatest success so far was winning the world title in the 10,000 meter run in 2011.

Career

Jeilan first gained international attention in 2006 when he won the gold medal in the 10,000 meter run at the Junior World Championships in Athletics in Beijing . In the same year he achieved a personal best of 27: 02.81 min at the Memorial Van Damme in Brussels. As the only runner in the junior class, the Kenyan Samuel Kamau Wanjiru had ever run faster before.

At the World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh in 2008 , Jeilan won the junior race title after giving up the race in Mombasa the previous year. At the African Athletics Championships in Addis Ababa , he finished second over 10,000 meters behind his compatriot Gebregziabher Gebremariam . Over the same distance he was only third at the Junior World Championships in Athletics in Bydgoszcz and could not successfully defend his title. In road running , he won this season at the Giro di Castelbuono and the São Silvestre de Luanda .

After barely producing outstanding results in 2009 and 2010, Jeilan stepped back into the limelight at the 2011 World Athletics Championships in Daegu. In the 10,000 meter run he surprisingly secured the gold medal ahead of the Briton Mohammed Farah and his compatriot Imane Merga . Two weeks later, he won the Pan-African Games in Maputo over the same distance .
