Igor Schpilband ( Russian Игорь Юрьевич Шпильбанд ; born July 14, 1964 in Moscow ) is a former Soviet ice dancer and today's ice dance coach.

Life

Together with his ice dance partner Tatjana Gladkowa , Schpilband became vice junior world champion in 1982 and junior world champion in ice dancing in 1983 . The pair were trained by Lyudmila Pachomova . After her death from cancer in 1986, Gladkowa and Schpilband resigned from amateur sports.

Schpilband was married to Veronika Perschina (with Marat Akbarow ), a Russian pair skater, 1979 junior world champion and bronze medalist at the 1985 European Championship . The couple have two children. The daughter Yekaterina starts at the national level in the USA .

In January 1990 Schpilband fled with his wife Veronika Perschina and the ice dancers Gorsha Sur and Jelena Krikanowa to the United States, where he settled in Canton , Michigan . There he works as a successful ice dance trainer, initially with Elizabeth Coates and from 2001 with Marina Sujewa . Schpilband also works as a choreographer for most of his protégés. He is married to the trainer Adrienne Lenda .

At the 2011 World Championships in Moscow , Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir , Meryl Davis & Charlie White and Maia Shibutani & Alex Shibutani, three ice dance couples trained by Schpilband and Sujewa in Detroit, landed on the podium.

On June 3, 2012, Schpilband confirmed that he had been fired from his club. He was surprised and shocked about it.
