Ilam , also Elam ( Persian ایلام, DMG Īlām , Kurdish
ئیلام, Îlam ) is a city in western Iran in close proximity to the Iraqi border. It is the capital of the homonymous province of Ilam . The city is on one level, but there are still individual mountains or chains like the Kabir cow nearby . The most important river is the Godar-e Kos, which flows from here into Iraq. In 2006 Ilam has an extrapolated 155,289 inhabitants.
The history of the city is very young. Until the end of the 19th century, the village of Deh-e Bala stood here , which served as the summer residence of the local governor. This governor Hosaynqoli Chan Abu Qaddara built a garrison, residences and his own fortress. The village was named Hosaynabad after him and was only given its current name in 1936. In the early 1920s and 1930s, the power of local governors was curtailed and Iran centralized. With the settlement of the nomads in the area and the expansion of Ilam to an administrative city and in 1976 to the capital of its own province of Ilam, the population grew rapidly from 8,346 (1956) to 126,346 in 1996.
Ilam is located at an altitude of 1431 meters above sea level in a cool mountain region in western Iran. The climate is also often influenced by the deserts in the west and south. The winters are characterized by heavy rainfall and snow. Summers are mostly hot and dry.
