Imke Duplitzer (born July 28, 1975 in Karlsruhe ) is an active German sword fencer and multiple German champion . From 2011 to 2013 she was president of the fencing club OFC Bonn , their long-term training facility and sponsoring association for the Bonn performance center. By profession she is a sports soldier ( sergeant major in the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr in Cologne) and a diving instructor ( PADI instructor).

Success in epee fencing

  • Vice World Champion 2002
  • European champion 1999 , 2010
  • German champion 1999 , 2000 , 2001 , 2002 , 2004 , 2006 , 2010
  • Military world champion 1997 and 1999
  • Multiple medal winner at world championships with the German national epee fencing team
  • Olympic participant in 1996 , 2000 , 2004 , 2008 and 2012

With the German epee team she won the silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. She managed the feat of catching up a two-goal deficit in the last seven seconds of regular time in the very last battle of the semi-final against France against Laura Flessel-Colovic and marking the winning goal after just three seconds of extra time.

For this she was awarded the silver bay leaf on March 16, 2005.

From 1992 to 2004 she was a member of the fencing department of the Heidenheimer SB . She then trained at OFC Bonn until mid-2013, and since then at TSG Halle-Neustadt. In the meantime she headed the fencing department of the Cologne gay and lesbian sports club SC Janus.

Private life

She was born as the daughter of a business economist at Siemens and a housewife in Karlsruhe and has an older brother. Between the ages of six and ten, the family lived in Lagos , Nigeria . In 1984 she was impressed by a video recording by Olympic champion Cornelia Hanisch . Two years later her father took a job in Heidenheim , which happened to be one of the centers of German fencing. She began fencing there when she was eleven. In 1992 she moved to the fencing boarding school in Bonn, but trained again in Heidenheim from 1996 to 2004. From 1999 to autumn 2007 she lived with her partner, a teacher, and her daughter in Bonn. After the death of her father on February 6, 2007, Duplitzer took a break from sports. In world view, she sees herself as a communitarian . In addition to her sporting and professional career, she studies politics and organization at the Fernuniversität Hagen .

Social Commitment

In her environment she had been an openly lesbian for a long time , talked about experiences with her friend and also took them to receptions. Since 2002 at the latest, it had also been outed on its homepage. In the media, people wrote at best about their appearance (boyish, androgynous). After she left the Heidenheim fencing club and shortly before the 2004 Olympic Games, media interest increased sharply for a short time and it was then a topic in the media for the first time, in the headlines. Only since then has it been widely considered "officially outed". In 2007, she vented her displeasure that she felt discriminated against as a lesbian, non-conformist athlete. With reference to Britta Heidemann , she said that because of her outing, she never received a sponsorship contract or invitations to appear on television: "Why wasn't I invited to television at the Olympic Games three years ago - a fencer who was worse than me, but undressed for ' Playboy ' beforehand ? ”Society is tolerant, but some comments from people would raise strong doubts as to whether this is really the case.

Before the 2008 Olympics sharp in Beijing practiced Duplitzer criticism of the handling of the People's Republic of China with the human rights and announced their personal boycott of the opening ceremony of. "I assume that this is a demonstration just because of this human and material battle that the Chinese will fight at the opening ceremony," she said, explaining her decision. She sharply criticized the ignorance of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) towards the athletes. The governing body of the Olympic Games has too much power and makes its decisions without consulting the athletes, even though they “have to hold out their noses”. The IOC is "a club of feudal rulers that can only be joined by invitation."

In the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games in London , in which she is participating, she criticized the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) : “When I talk to Doctor Michael Vesper or when I see President Thomas Bach from afar - I think they ruffle not at all, ”said Duplitzer five days before the start of the Olympic Games in an interview with the Bild newspaper. She also said to the officials and the association's policy: “What they say counts for 0.5 percent of the 392 German Olympic athletes. I want an honest debate about German sport. Because: The officials no longer even know what is going on in the sports hall. [...] The services continue to collapse. It's also because the system is completely wrong. We will have a big problem with youngsters after the Olympics. We already have a massive coaching problem. The trainers run away from us because they earn much, much, much more in other countries and find better framework conditions. "

On the subject of doping, Duplitzer was very clear in the same interview: “If you have a little money for medication, a good doctor and a loose bandage, you will never get caught in your life. And: the doping hunters can only test what they know. If you, as an athlete, take a fifth generation Epo that was developed in the rat laboratory somewhere in China, you can eat what it takes and you won't get tested positive. Only the stupid get caught. ”Duplitzer's statements caused a sensation in the associations and the Frankfurter Rundschau suspected that the provocation of the Bild-Zeitung by the critical interview shortly before the Olympics was planned.

In autumn 2012 her first book was published together with EU politician Daniel Cohn-Bendit , in which she discusses sport, pressure to perform, doping, the media, etc. with Reinhold Messner , Heidi Schüller , Sylvia Schenk , Ines Geipel and Toni Innauer .

In an interview with Tagesspiegel , Duplitzer commented critically on the Berlin declaration against homophobia in sport , which was published in 2013 with a large media presence . The supporters of the declaration “shouldn't talk so much, just do it. I also wonder why no athletes had a say at the event. It's about them. ” Homosexual athletes would“ still have the same experiences as Martina Navrátilová 25 years ago. They are bullied, cut, disregarded. I'm just tired of being gazed at like a circus animal. [...] I don't want to be treated like I am normal. I am normal."

Imke Duplitzer is a member of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen . At a federal delegates' conference in Dresden in February 2014, she was voted 17th on the list for the European elections.
