In the Region of Ice is an American short film directed by Peter Werner in 1976. The screenplay is based on a short story by Joyce Carol Oates . The film, produced by Andre R. Guttfreund and Werner, won an Oscar at the 49th Academy Awards in 1977 .

The sharp-tongued nun Irene, who on the other hand can also be full of compassion and very sensitive, tries to help a sullen, emotionally disturbed boy and break through the armor of ice that surrounds him. Little by little it becomes clear how clever and ingenious the young man is, who as a student attends a Catholic college where Sister Irene teaches English. A relationship of trust slowly builds up between teacher and student.

The film title refers to the process of thawing the tank, which the boy has built around himself like a protective wall.
