The Latin America Information Center e. V. (ila) is a non-profit association based in the Oscar Romero House in Bonn . The aim of the association is to publish critical and independent information from Latin America . The focus is on news and background information from a grassroots perspective. The Latin America Information Center sees itself as part of the political left and is involved in overarching political alliances such as the peace and anti-war movement or Attac . The association has existed since 1975 and publishes the ila magazine of the same name .

history

The Latin America Observatory emerged from the solidarity movement with the victims of the military dictatorships that ruled many countries in South America , including Chile , Argentina , Brazil , Bolivia , Paraguay and Uruguay , in the 1970s . From 1973 to 1975 the “Second International Russell Tribunal ” in Brussels and Rome dealt with the violation of human rights in Latin America and the joint responsibility of European politics and economy (for example through arms deliveries). After the end of the tribunal, members of the German support group founded the Informationsstelle Latin America eV in October 1975 to provide information in Germany on developments in Latin America.

The magazine “ila” appears ten times a year. It is 56 to 64 pages thick in A4 format and usually contains no advertising. The volume of each edition corresponds to a paperback of 200 pages. Each issue consists of a key topic (50–60%), reports and backgrounds, country news from the Latin American press service Poonal and notes or contributions to discussions from the solidarity movement.

The first issue appeared in December 1976 under the title "ila-info", and since 1988 the magazine has appeared under the title "ila". It is mainly sold through subscription, but also through bookshops or over-the-counter sales. In addition to reporting on political and social processes in Latin America, there was also continuous information on cultural topics and contributions and interviews on the life of Latin Americans in Germany and Europe. Between 1989 and 1998, the “ila latina” in Spanish and Portuguese appeared several times a year as a supplement to the German-language “ila”.

The contents of the magazine are provided by volunteer authors, including an editorial team (approx. 20 members from the Cologne-Bonn area), regular employees in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and ila correspondents in Latin America.

In addition to the magazine, there has been an Internet site since 2002 which, in addition to the topic archive and selected articles from the magazine, also contains announcements of dates and a daily updated overview of the Latin American-related articles in the German-language press.

Events

The ila itself appears several times a year as the organizer or co-organizer of Latin America-specific information events in Bonn and Cologne.

financing

The economic basis of ila is made up of volunteer work, income from magazine subscriptions, donations and occasional donations from foundations.
