Information technology basic education ( information technology basic education ) or information technology basic course ( ITG ) in Germany describes the subject in school in which basic knowledge of working with the computer is imparted.

The term ITG has been recognized nationwide since the 1990s for a basic education in the field of information and communication technology.

In the first years ITG was taught as a separate subject, usually by math and computer science teachers. With the increasing recognition of media and methodological skills as key qualifications in the educational standards that have meanwhile been standardized across the country , the teaching of basic information technology knowledge is being integrated into specialist teaching at all grade levels. In some schools, ITG is still taught as an independent subject in order to specifically promote the media skills of the students.

The ITG's content includes word processing , spreadsheet , presentation , file management and image processing programs , graphics software , information and communication systems , simulations and modeling . In addition, the basic function of hardware and of process data processing (e.g. in science or technology lessons) should be taught.

Since the development of network technologies, especially the Internet, since the mid-1990s, one often speaks of information and communication technology basic education instead of ITG.

In 1986, Alfons Rissberger was the originator and editor of the first German textbook Information Technology Basic Education (ITG) (Klett-Verlag). As early as 1990, in the 2nd edition of his “Outlook”, Rissberger detailed the basics and effects of e-learning.

To acquire the skills to implement the ITG for teachers and prospective teachers in all school forms and subjects, there was also support on the part of commercial computer companies.
