Inge Morath (born May 27, 1923 in Graz ; † January 30, 2002 in New York ) was an Austrian photographer .

Live and act

The daughter of two natural scientists, born as Ingeborg Mörath , moved with her parents in the 1930s, due to their professional activity, first to Darmstadt and later to Berlin . Before she was admitted to study Romance Studies and Linguistics there , she did a year of social work at a kindergarten in a Berlin workers' district. Morath was just able to pass her state examination before she was obliged to work for a "war-important" company in Berlin-Tempelhof. As a result of a bomb attack on the company, Morath joined a refugee train to Austria , where she struggled to find her parents' home. She first worked as a journalist in Salzburg , where a square has been named after her since 2008, and then in Vienna . With the support of photographer Ernst Haas , she was able to move to Paris in 1949 , where she wrote texts for the Magnum photo agency . It was there that Morath got to know the fascination of photography. In 1951, she completed her photography training in London with an internship with Simon Guttmann .

From 1953 she worked for Magnum, as well as for magazines such as Vogue and Paris Match . She soon became self-employed. Exhibitions in many important museums and galleries prove their worldwide importance. Morath was the first woman to be accepted into the legendary and until then all male communion of the Magnum photo agency.

Morath traveled a lot and lived temporarily in New York . Henri Cartier-Bresson and Gjon Mili vied for the role of their favorite mentor . From 1962 until her death, she was married to the writer Arthur Miller , whom she met while filming the film Misfits with his then-wife Marilyn Monroe . She also went on a number of trips with Miller, which led to ever new books with her photos. In addition, numerous commissioned work was created for agencies, magazines and publishers. Their daughter Rebecca Miller (* 1962) is a painter, screenwriter and film director. The son Daniel (* 1966) was born with Down syndrome , which the couple kept a secret.
