Ingibjörg Hákonardóttir Bjarnason (born December 14, 1867 in Þingeyri ; died October 30, 1941 ) was an Icelandic women's rights activist, politician and teacher. She was the first woman to be a parliamentarian in Althing, Iceland .

Life

Ingibjörg Bjarnason was born in a small village in the West Fjords as the daughter of Hákon Bjarnason (1828–1877) and Jóhanna Kristín Þorleifsdóttir (1834–1896). Her siblings include the psychologist Ágúst H. Bjarnason (1875–1952) and the politician Lárus H. Bjarnason (1866–1934). After her father died in 1877, she moved to Reykjavík and attended a women's school there. She completed this in 1882. She then attended schools in Denmark, where she was the first Icelander to complete a training in gymnastics. From 1893 to 1901 she taught gymnastics to children at a school in Reykjavík. In 1903 she became a teacher at the women's school. Three years later she became its rector and remained so until her death.

From the 1890s she was active in the women's movement. When Iceland introduced women's suffrage in 1915 , she was selected by the Icelandic women's organizations to give a speech in the Icelandic parliament on the occasion of the ceremony.

Ingibjörg Bjarnason stood for a women's party ( Kvennalistinn eldri ) in 1922 in the elections and on February 15, 1923 became the first woman to enter the Icelandic parliament. She remained a member of parliament until 1930. She was partly independent, partly a member of the conservative parties Íhaldsflokkurinn or Independence Party .
