Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1976 at the Wald-Oberschule in Berlin-Westend , Schmitt studied law at the Free University of Berlin , which he completed in 1983 with the first state examination in law. Political party

In 1975 Schmitt joined the CDU Berlin-Charlottenburg , local association for the castle . This local association under the leadership of Wolfgang Antes was dissolved in 1978 as part of a regional reform within the Charlottenburg CDU, most members changed to the local association Lietzensee , which was chaired again shortly afterwards by Wolfgang Antes. In the mid-1980s, Schmitt disempowered his previous sponsor Antes and took over his offices, initially in the Lietzensee local association .

Schmitt became chairman of the district association Charlottenburg of the Junge Union in 1978 and has been a member of the board of the CDU district association Berlin-Charlottenburg since 1978, of which he became chairman in 1991 and remained until it was merged with the previously independent district association Berlin-Wilmersdorf in 2000.

From 2000 he was chairman of the newly formed district association Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf , which he led until he resigned in February 2009.

Schmitt was elected deputy state chairman of the Berlin CDU in 1997 and was then its general secretary from 2000 . He resigned from this office in June 2001 after he had called the school senator at the time, Klaus Böger ( SPD ), a “political hooker”.

From 2003, Schmitt was state treasurer until he was finally elected state chairman of the CDU in Berlin in May 2005.

In the course of the dispute over the leadership of the Berlin CDU with the parliamentary group chairman in the House of Representatives Friedbert Pflüger in autumn 2008, he resigned on October 1, 2008 as regional chairman of the CDU Berlin. His successor was provisionally Joachim Zeller and on November 18, 2008 Frank Henkel was elected. Henkel had already taken over the chairmanship of Pflüger on September 11, 2008. At the state delegates' meeting of the CDU on November 22, 2008, Schmitt lost to Stefanie Vogelsang in the election for the promising third place on the Berlin state list for election to the 17th German Bundestag . His attempt to win the direct mandate in the Bundestag constituency of Berlin-Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf instead in order to move back into the Bundestag failed.
