Ingrid Hentschel

Ingrid Hentschel (* 1954 in Bad Muskau ) is a German theater and cultural scientist . She teaches as a professor for aesthetics and communication at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences .

Life

Hentschel studied literature and political science at the University of Hanover . During her studies and her doctorate, she received a scholarship from the Ev. Studienwerk Villigst . She also studied cultural education at the University of Hildesheim . In 1986 she received her doctorate from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Hanover (Dr. phil.) During and after her studies, Ingrid Hentschel worked as an author, actress, dramaturge and as a lecturer at various universities (modern German literature, focus on contemporary drama). This was followed by employment as a research assistant with her own research at the universities of Hanover and Hildesheim. She received several scholarships such as the Dorothea Erxleben Scholarship and as a scholarship holder of the International Forum of Young Stage Members. She did her own directorial work with the Theater Doppelherz and for the World Exhibition Expo 2000. Since 1999 she has been professor for aesthetics and communication, especially theater and play at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences . Hentschel heads the theater department and was vice dean in the social affairs department from 2009 to 2015 . She lives in Hanover with her husband Gerhard Stamer .

Research and Teaching

Ingrid Hentschel represents areas of research that focus on theater art with its theoretical and current references. She pays particular attention to the relationships between developments in theater aesthetics and contemporary culture. Hentschel can look back on decades of research in the field of contemporary theater and theater aesthetics for children and young people, among other things. Her teaching is both scientifically and practically artistically oriented. It therefore concerns theater and cultural theory, children's and youth theater and the theory and practice of scenic play. Ingrid Hentschel researches and teaches internationally. In 2006 she taught at the Universidad Central, Santiago de Chile, in the master’s program and worked as a consultant for course development within the DAAD . She gave lectures a. a. in Estonia at the Institute for Theater Studies and Philology at the University of Tartu , at the University of Hassan II Casablanca in Morocco as well as in Liechtenstein and Belgium. Various other lectures were given by Hentschel u. a. in Salzburg at the Paris Lodron University , at the Salzburg Festival Dialogues and at the Salzburg State Theater. Together with Klaus Hoffmann, she is the editor of the series Scena - Theater und Religion .

Research projects (selection)

The art of gift. Reciprocity as a paradigm of cultural practice in social fields .

Ingrid Hentschel dedicates this research project to processes of reciprocity and exchange in theater, art and society. In view of the increasing economization of culture, education and society, she researches the current importance of gift theorems in the visual and performative arts. In connection with the importance of the gift for the development of sociality, the discussion also focuses on the commons . Ingrid Hentschel is a signatory of the Convivialist Manifesto.

Play and ritual - theater and religion .

In various contributions, Hentschel explores the relationships between play and ritual in performative formats, with particular reference to the works of Marina Abramović , Jan Fabre , Luc Perceval, but also recently Roberto Castellucci. She addressed questions of the theatrical dimension of religious practice e.g. B. at the invitation of the German Bishops' Conference (workshop discussion 2010), the Tutzing Academy , as well as during various international symposia and theater festivals such as B. “Scena - Theater and Religion” in Hanover.

Children's and youth theater is a special focus in research and engagement . Ingrid Hentschel was a member of the board of trustees of the Children's and Youth Theater Center of the Federal Republic of Germany, as well as a member of various juries and selection commissions of the children's music theater festival “Traumspiele” and the children's and youth theater biennial Wait a minute! .
