Inkscape ( suitcase word from English ink , "ink" and - scape as in landscape , "landscape") is a free , platform-independent software for editing and creating two-dimensional vector graphics . The program is suitable for creating one-sided documents such as logos , vector art, technical diagrams , maps , city ​​maps , leaflets , CD motifs, posters, lettering, comics , etc.

Work files are stored in a format that is on the source open to XML -based Scalable Vector Graphics W3C based standard. Therefore, work files can be displayed in many image viewers without conversion .

Objects can be created in different ways. It can be graphical primitives , Bezier curves , movable connections and text fields produce raster graphics import and freehand lines and calligraphic characters to draw. All objects can be cut or combined with one another using Boolean operations on other objects. In addition, closed paths can be filled with polygons , which adapt their shape autonomously to the shape of the path. Objects and paths can be manipulated through coordinate transformations and shifting individual points. Texts can be formatted hard or placed on a path of any shape. Continuous text can be displayed distributed over several text blocks. Individual colors as well as color gradients or masks can be configured on objects. Surfaces with more complex colors can be created with the help of the integrated filters. There are also various filters that create artistic effects and change the shape of paths. In addition to vector graphics , raster graphics can also be imported into Inkscape projects and vectorized. From version 0.92, Inkscape can export PDFs and PostScript 3 - which support complex color gradients.

File formats

Inkscape primarily uses the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format . All other file formats that the program imports or exports are converted to SVG. Inkscape uses Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) embedded in the SVG data . However, it does not implement the entire standard of SVG or that of CSS. The most important unsupported part concerns the animation possibilities contained in the SVG standard .

Inkscape emerged in 2003 as a spin-off of the Sodipodi vector drawing program due to disagreements about the goals and development path. In the course of the split, there was a change from the programming language C to C ++ and from the GTK + library to the C ++ variant gtkmm . Another big change concerned the user interface : Sodipodi's user interface was based on GIMP and CorelDRAW , while Inkscape's redesigned user interface was based on Xara Xtreme . Inkscape has also been expanded to include a number of new functions compared to Sodipodi.

In 2018, 2Geom was published as lib2Geom and placed under an independent project in order to accelerate further development.

Version 1.0 has been developed since 2018 and contains fundamental changes. The change from Gtk + 2 to 3 and Python 2 to 3 are important and necessary parts of the modernization of the libraries. Extensions must be adapted to be compatible with Python 3.
