The Inle Lake , a freshwater lake in Shan State in Myanmar is known for its leg rowers and floating villages and gardens . People's lives are entirely focused on the lake.

General

The lake with a north-south extension of about 22 km and an east-west extension of a maximum of 10 km is 875 m above sea level. With an average surface area of 12,000 hectares, it is the second largest lake in Myanmar after Lake Indawgyi .

The 17 villages within the lake and on the lakeshore are mostly inhabited by Intha . The houses are built on stilts. A total of 70,000 people live here.

Many of the vegetable, fruit and flower crops are cultivated in floating fields. The basis of these floating fields is a very fertile solid mass consisting of swamp, earth and water hyacinths , which are attached to the bottom of the lake by means of bamboo poles.

The locomotion in the narrow canals of the villages, in the fields and near the shore is done in narrow canoes. The leg rowing technique used here is typical of the lake. The rowing man stands at the stern of the boat. If the hands are required for fishing, for example, the leg is used exclusively for rowing by pinching the oar with the leg. Today, however, only the larger boats with outboard motors are allowed for long distances on the lake.

The lake belongs to the administrative unit of Nyaung Shwe with about 130,000 inhabitants. The capital of the administrative unit is the place of the same name Nyaung Shwe .

fauna

16 to 31 endemic fish are found in Inle Lake and the surrounding swamps , including the carp fish Danio erythromicron , Devario auropurpureus , Devario jayarami , Microrasbora rubescens , the naked arbor ( Sawbwa resplendens ) and the snakehead fish Channa harcourtbutleri . The grass carp ( Ctenopharyngodon idella ) and Labeo rohita occur as neobiota . Inle Lake has been an official bird sanctuary since 1985.

Attractions
