The Interior Ministry of France (officially French Ministère de l'intérieur , in German : Ministry of the Interior ) is one of the most important cabinet departments in the French government . The Ministry is based in the Hôtel de Beauvau in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, next to the Elysée Palace . Christophe Castaner has been the minister since October 16, 2018 .

history

The Ministry of the Interior was founded on August 7, 1790 in the wake of the French Revolution and the associated reorganization of the state. The ministry was given responsibility for internal administration, the organization of elections and, in some cases, also for economic questions in agriculture and trade. The police, on the other hand, were subject to their own police ministry in 1796 and 1818. During the period of the First Empire in 1804, a ministry of religion ( Ministère des Cultes ) was spun off. With the creation of more and more ministries, especially in the 20th century, the Ministry of the Interior lost some of its responsibilities over time.

Responsibilities

The Ministry of the Interior is responsible for the general internal security of the country, with regard to law and order, as well as in the event of natural disasters, for the police forces, namely the Police nationale and the Gendarmerie nationale for internal police tasks, civil defense and the fire service . It is responsible for issuing personal documents such as passports , ID cards , driver's licenses, etc. in the prefectures , regulating cooperation between regional administrations and central government and holding elections. The ministry has authority over the prefects in the départements . It is also responsible for religious matters, especially in relation to the Catholic Church .

The general wanted file ( French Fichier des personnes recherchées , RPF), to which the Fiche S belongs, is a computer file of the French National Police ( French Police nationale ), which is the responsibility of the Ministry of the Interior. He is also responsible for the Direction générale de la sécurité intérieure (DGSI, German  General Directorate for Internal Security ), the domestic secret service .

The ministry is responsible for the overseas departments and other overseas possessions ( Ministère de l'Outre-mer et des collectivités territoriales ).

In 2012 the ministry had a budget of 25.5 billion euros and 280,000 employees in its field of work.
