Innocent of Alaska ( Russian Иннокентий Вениаминов , secular Иван Евсеевич Попов Ivan Jewsejewitsch Popov , in the literature often Ivan Veniaminov * August 26 . Jul / 6. September 1797 greg. In Anga (Anginskoje) Ujesd Verkholensk in Irkutsk , † 31 March July / April 12, 1879 greg. In Moscow ), later known as Saint Innocent of Alaska or Moscow, was a priest ,Archbishop , Metropolitan and Missionary of the Russian Orthodox Church and is an apostle-like .
At the same time he played an important role in the study of the languages and culture of the northern Pacific region , especially with regard to the ethnography of the Aleutians and the Tlingit . Among other things, he has translated Bible texts into several Aleut languages and worked as a missionary on the island of Unalaska . His descriptions of life in the Aleutians are important evidence of the now largely destroyed Aleutian culture. In 1977 he was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church .
