The Institute for Energy and Environmental Technology e. V. ( IUTA ) is an independent research facility based in Duisburg . It is one of the largest process engineering institutes in Germany in the field of energy and environmental technology . The focus of activities is on transfer projects for the transfer of scientific knowledge and processes to industrial application. The IUTA employs around 140 people. It is located in the buildings of the former Krupp Research Institute on the site of the disused Rheinhausen steelworks . The IUTA has been an affiliate of the University of Duisburg-Essen and a founding member of the Johannes Rau Research Association since 1991 .

The IUTA was founded in 1989 as a non-profit organization, initially under the name “Institute for Environmental Technology and Environmental Analysis e. V. “founded. The establishment of the institute, initiated by the North Rhine-Westphalian state government, the University of Duisburg and large industrial companies, was intended to provide impetus for structural change in the region that was in upheaval due to the steel crisis of the 1980s and 1990s. The first research projects dealt with the reduction of dioxins in waste incineration plants and trace analysis for the measurement of toxic substances in soil, water and air. As part of the take-back ordinance for old electrical devices planned at the time , the IUTA began in 1991 with pilot projects and scientific studies on the topics of circular economy and recycling .

Important events in the development of the institute were the construction of a test facility for the separation of carbon dioxide from power plant exhaust gases in 2001, the opening of the nanomaterial synthesis and process technology division (2008) and the construction of a new hall in which the activities for filtration and adsorption are combined (2011). Since 2009, the IUTA has been organizing the “Filtration Day”, a lecture event for employees of research institutions and medium-sized companies in the filtration industry. In 2011 the IUTA was named the first “place of progress” by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

Christof Schulz , one of the Scientific Directors, was awarded the Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation in 2014 .

In 2014, a working group from the institute and a working group from the DTNW (German Textile Research Institute North-West) received the Federal Ministry of Economics' raw material efficiency award . In 2014 the institute celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Current research and development

In addition to the original work areas air pollution control , filtration, trace analysis and electronic waste - Recycling new work priorities have evolved. The IUTA is currently focusing on the topics of aerosols and fine dust , sustainable nanotechnology , functional surfaces ( adsorption and filtration), highly toxic substances and future energy supply .

Cooperations and memberships

As an affiliated institute, IUTA cooperates closely with the University of Duisburg-Essen . Since 1991 the institute has been a member of the working group of industrial research associations "Otto von Guericke" (AiF), an industry-driven organization that has set itself the task of promoting applied research and development for medium- sized companies. There are industrial partnerships with around 350 companies. The IUTA is a founding member of the Johannes Rau Research Association . This was founded in 2014 and is an umbrella organization of non-university research institutes in North Rhine-Westphalia.
