Insulin mast

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Insulin mast describes a medical phenomenon known since the beginning of the 20th century. Insulin is an anabolic hormone . If the body regularly has too much insulin available ( hyperinsulinism ), it builds body mass and especially fat tissue.

Insulin mast was initially used as a therapeutic measure for cachexia . The administration of insulin to healthy people and thus the artificial creation of hyperinsulinism is known in competitive sports and is prohibited as a doping measure .

causes

Hyperinsulinism is responsible for insulin production, the classic causes of which are the insulinoma and excessive insulin treatment for diabetes mellitus . In insulinoma, the body produces too much of the hormone, which basically leads to hypoglycemia . However, some patients have got used to alleviating these conditions by frequent, mostly high-carbohydrate meals and thereby become fat . In diabetes mellitus, excessive administration of insulin can also lead to hyperinsulinism and the same phenomenon can occur.

therapy

The causal hyperinsulinism must be combated therapeutically (→ main article of the underlying diseases such as insulinoma and diabetes mellitus ) .
