Intakt Records

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Intakt Records is a Swiss record label based in Zurich . It is one of the leading labels for European free jazz and the new improvisational music that has emerged from it .

history

The first Intakt record, " Irène Schweizer Live at Taktlos", was released in 1986 because there was no record company that wanted to publish the tapes with Irène Schweizer's recordings from the first Taktlos Festival . The LP became a small sales success: without an international distribution network, around 2000 copies were sold. Irène Schweizer's duo series with drummers Louis Moholo, Andrew Cyrille, Pierre Favre, Günter Sommer and Han Bennink also sold well, and Intakt Records landed with the release of Barry Guy's composition “Harmos” with the London Jazz Composers Orchestra a jazz classic from an early age.

At the end of 1986 Intakt Records was given the legal form of an association with a non-commercial purpose. It mainly publishes contemporary jazz music in the border area between improvisation and composition. In 1988 Intakt Records received the German Record Critics' annual award for Irène Schweizer's record "The Storming of the Winter Palace".

Early on, the circle of published musicians was expanded beyond Switzerland to include musicians such as Cecil Taylor , Barry Guy , Elliott Sharp , London Jazz Composers Orchestra, Günter Sommer, Uli Gumpert .

Current situation

The company is still run by founding member Patrik Landolt. Rosmarie A. Meier, musician Irène Schweizer and musician Lucas Niggli are on the board of the association . In 2005, Intakt Records celebrated the hundredth record with a triple CD, on which Alexander von Schlippenbach and the Berlin quartet Die Enttünschung (Dörner, Mahall, Roder, Jenneßen) present all of Thelonious Monk's compositions . The work was awarded the German Record Critics' Prize (quarterly list). In the last few years, Intakt Records has released sixteen productions a year, including the Swiss musicians around Irène Schweizer and Pierre Favre, above all Berlin jazz musicians around Alexander von Schlippenbach. Another mainstay are publications with New York musicians around Oliver Lake , Andrew Cyrille or the British resident Fred Frith , who has published some of his CDs on Intakt Records since 2003.

The musicians at Intakt include Lucas Niggli , Hans Koch , Martin Schütz , Fredy Studer , Jürg Wickihalder , Omri Ziegele , Co Streiff , Katharina Weber , Gabriela Friedli , Hans Hassler , Sylvie Courvoisier , Stefan Aeby , Christoph Irniger , Sarah Buechi , Julian Sartorius , Florian Egli, Heiri Känzig , Aki Takase , Rudi Mahall , Axel Dörner , Frank Möbus , Daniel Erdmann , Michael Griener , Uli Gumpert , Conrad Bauer , Angelika Niescier , Florian Weber , Marilyn Crispell , Elliott Sharp , Ingrid Laubrock , Tom Rainey , David Murray , Jim Black , Gerry Hemingway , Chico Freeman , Stephan Crump , Mary Halvorson , Ellery Eskelin , Alexander Hawkins ( UpRoot , 2017) and Aruán Ortiz .

Intakt Records is also increasingly active as an organizer. As part of the 25th anniversary, Intakt Records presented new productions in the Zurich jazz club Moods . Intakt Records has been co-organizer of the Zurich jazz festival “Unerhört” for ten years. In March 2012, Patrik Landolt received the board of trustees for the New York avant-garde club The Stone from the New York musician and jazz club operator John Zorn . From March 1st to 15th, 2012, Swiss and New York jazz greats from the Intakt label met there at 24 concerts.
