International Committee on Documentation
The International Committee on Documentation ( International Committee for Documentation , French: Comité international pour la documentation , CIDOC for short ) is a committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM).
It has set itself the goal of developing standards for documentation for museums and adapting them to new circumstances. The development process for these standards began as early as 1978 and required almost twenty years of development in order to record as many objects as possible to be documented. The documentation standard presented describes a data model for the documentation of museum objects: The CIDOC Information Categories. The first version was released in 1995 . In Germany the model was implemented in the data field catalog for the basic inventory of the documentation working group of the German Museum Association .
The International Committee for Documentation of the International Council of Museums has also published the Conceptual Reference Model (CIDOC CRM), which emerged from the work of the committee's internal group for documentation standards. It is an object-oriented reference data model and contains definitions and a formal structure for describing concepts and relationships in the documentation of cultural heritage.
The International Committee for Documentation organizes an annual committee conference with various plenary sessions with contributions and reports on the documentation work and new initiatives, as well as workshops and working groups on various topics and areas of documentation work. As a rule, visits are also made to the respective organizing museums in order to get to know the respective documentation practice. The committee conference takes place every three years as part of the general conference of all ICOM committees.
