The Yamaha Keyboards International Masters 1984 was a professional snooker tournament during the 1983/84 season without any influence on the world rankings. The main round of the tournament was held from February 27 to March 14, 1984 in the Assembly Rooms of the English city ​​of Derby . The tournament became known for its unusual tournament mode, through which a group stage in the final came about, in which Steve Davis won his third title at this tournament before Dave Martin and John Dunning . The Canadian Kirk Stevens played the highest break of the tournament with a 107 break .

Prize money

For the fourth and final time the tournament was sponsored by the Yamaha Corporation , this time the tournament was entirely called the Yamaha Keyboards International Masters 1984 . The following year, Dulux took over the sponsorship of the tournament, which was then called the British Open . The prize money for this edition rose by a good £ 10,000 to £ 63,750 compared to the previous edition , of which the winner accounted for a little less than a fifth of £ 12,000.

Main round

As in previous years, large parts of the tournament were held in group phases, this year the number of individual groups was increased, the number of participants in each group was reduced to three players and the final was also played as a group phase for the first time. The first phase of the main round, the main group phase, consisted of nine groups, which consisted of two qualifiers and one player who was set for the main round. A simple round-robin tournament was played and a table was set up and the first-placed group advanced to the semi-final group stage. This consisted of three groups, in which the same procedure as in the previous round took place and the respective group winners advanced to the final. A simple round-robin tournament was also played in this to determine the winner. Up to and including the semi-finals, the best of 3 frames mode was played, whereas the mode of the finals cannot be precisely determined from the available sources.

final

As already written above, three players took part in the final. While Steve Davis , reigning world champion, two-time winner of this tournament and one of the favorites for this year's title, made it to the finals without any problems, he met two of his English compatriots, both of whom reached the finals of a professional tournament for the only time in their careers : Dave Martin had also easily survived both groups and knocked defending champion Ray Reardon out of the tournament. John Dunning , on the other hand, had to tremble when he had survived the semifinals only because of his better frame difference after an equally confident appearance in the main group stage .

Davis was the clear favorite of the final. He lived up to this role when he defeated Dave Martin 3-0 and John Dunning 4-1, making him his third win at the tournament. The duel for third place was decided in the decider , which Dave Martin won.

qualification

Qualification took place in advance of the main round, but the exact dates are unknown. It is divided into two parts with the pre-qualification and the main qualification: In the pre-qualification there were a total of six groups of four, one group of three and an additional game, with the best two players in the main Qualification advanced. This consisted of 16 groups of three and two individual games, with the (group) winner qualifying for the main round. All games took place in the best of 3 frames mode .
