International Press Institute
The International Press Institute (IPI), founded in 1950 at a meeting of newspaper editors from 15 countries, is the oldest organization for strengthening press freedom .
Today the institute has leading editors and newspaper publishers from 115 countries among its members. The IPI is based in Vienna (before 2000: Zurich).
activities
As one of the most important international press freedom watchdogs , the IPI tries both by intervening at the highest state level via letters of protest in attacks on freedom of expression (murder or arrest of journalists, tightening of laws, etc.) and by promoting communication and exchange between the world leading journalists to promote freedom of the press and free exchange of thoughts and opinions around the world. Due to the high ranking of its members, the IPI has a relatively high authority in protests, but it also has to put up with the accusation of an “elite club”.
- In the event of attacks and threats against journalists and the media, the IPI organizes letters of protest to governments, similar to Amnesty International.
- IPI provides legal advice and support in legal proceedings.
- The IPI conducts extensive research on issues relating to its core area and publishes reports on a regular basis. The best known medium is the quarterly magazine “IPI Global Journalist”. From 1997 there is an annual report on journalists who perished in the course of their profession.
- Every year the IPI publishes an official report on violence against the media with a global focus.
- Once a year the IPI organizes an international congress, the IPI World Congress , in changing cities , with several hundred publishers, editors-in-chief and seasoned journalists from all over the world.
IPI Free Media Pioneer Award
The "IPI Free Media Pioneer Award" was founded in 1996. It honors personalities or organizations who stand up for free media against all “problematic situations” in their country.
2017
The IPI World Congress took place in Hamburg from May 18 to 20, 2017 . It was under the motto "Media freedom and quality in the digital age" ("Media freedom and quality in the digital age"). Among other things, a. Restrictions on freedom of the press around the world and the detention of journalists e.g. B. in Turkey.
