International Union of Microbiological Societies
The International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS, International Association of microbiological societies ) is one of 31 scientific umbrella organizations of the International Council for Science . The president is Eliora Z. Ron, Tel Aviv University . The seat is currently in Tel Aviv-Jaffa .

The objectives of the IUMS include:
- Promotion of microbiological sciences through international cooperation
- Organization of congresses
- Assistance in the publication of scientific results
- Representation of microbiological sciences within the ICSU and in contact with other international organizations.

The IUMS has three departments:
- Bacteriology and Applied Microbiology (BAM)
- Mycology
- virology
Each of these three departments has its own board of directors and organizes its own international congresses. In addition, the IUMS has 16 other specialized commissions and associations: six international committees, eight international commissions and two international federations.
For the period from 2005 to 2008, Karl-Heinz Schleifer from the Technical University of Munich was elected IUMS President.
history
The IUMS was founded in 1927. The IUMS was formerly a member of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS) ; Became independent in 1980 and has belonged to the ICSU since 1982 as one of the 29 scientific unions (as of 2006).
