The 72nd  Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) is scheduled to take place from February 10th to 20th, 2022. For the third time, they will be under the direction of Carlo Chatrian (Artistic Director) and Mariette Rissenbeek (Management).

After the previous edition was held in two separate blocks due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the festival management is planning to hold the Berlinale on a date in February as a face-to-face event.

Jury President 2022: M. Night Shyamalan

The American filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan was selected as president of the competition jury . The French actress Isabelle Huppert is to be honored with the Honorary Golden Bear and a tribute .

Film submission

As in the past, fictional films, documentary forms, animated films and experimental films were accepted in all sections with the exception of industrial or advertising films. After the pandemic-related suspension in the previous edition, short films were again accepted for the generation competitions at the Berlinale 2022 .

Feature films could be submitted until November 3, 2021, short films until November 17, and series until November 24.

Planned face-to-face event

At the beginning of October 2021, it was announced that the film festival as well as the European Film Market (February 10th to 17th, 2022), the Berlinale Co-Production Market (February 12th to 16th, 2022) and Berlinale Talents (February 12th to 17th, 2022) February 2022) and the World Cinema Fund are planning to hold offers on site as a face-to-face event. In addition, online formats are to be offered. The scope of the film program should be based on the 2020 edition held before the pandemic . The theater on Potsdamer Platz (“Berlinale Palast”) is to remain the central venue, where the press center, service facilities and other festival cinemas are also to be located. In addition, as in the past, the Berlinale is to play numerous cinemas in Berlin and bring festival films to various art-house cinemas in the city districts under the format “Berlinale Goes Kiez”.

Information on the corona access rules and online ticketing is to be announced in the first half of November 2021.

Forum Expanded

In August 2021 it became known that the previous head and co-founder of the Forum Expanded section, Stefanie Schulte Strathaus , was giving up her position. Co-founder Anselm Franke will also leave the selection team. Ulrich Ziemons (member of the selection team since 2012) and Kuwait artist and curator Ala Younis will take over the new management .

generation

This Berlinale section shows suitable international film productions for children and young people. The first contributions were presented on December 15, 2021. The House of World Cultures will once again function as the venue , while short films have been included in the program for the first time since 2020.

Perspective German cinema

The section is to be realigned in 2022 with the additional program “Perspective Match”. In addition to the work of directors and producers, the aim is to highlight the work of screenwriters, cinematographers, costume and make-up artists, editors, film composers, actors, production designers and sound designers. Together with the German Film Academy, a complementary film series is to be created in this way.

European Film Market

Under the motto "It all (re) starts here", the European Film Market is to be held from February 10th to 17th, 2022 with exhibition space in the Gropius Bau and the Marriott Hotel. The market is used for rights trading and numerous market screenings are to be held in the surrounding cinemas and in online screenings. The Berlinale Co-Production Market is part of the European Film Market. Martina Bleis is the director and project curator of the Berlinale Co-Production Market .

Berlinale Series Market

The Berlinale Series Market is scheduled to take place from February 14 to 16, 2022. In addition to a selection of market demonstrations, a conference on the subject of "High-end series" is planned.

Berlinale Talents

The 20th edition of the Berlinale Talents is planned as a program of publicly accessible talks and discussions. Most of the 200 invited talents should take part in the event in person. The program is to be supplemented by live streaming and interactive formats. Project manager is Christine Tröstrum , program manager Florian Weghorn.
