International Tree Archive

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Tree Archive (abbreviated IBA ) is an archive in the natural history museum Naturama in the Swiss city of Aarau ( Canton Aargau ). Before that, it was run by a foundation and was on display for some time in a museum on the topic of trees in Winterthur in the canton of Zurich .

history

In 1975, the professional photographer Verena Eggmann Steiner began taking photographs of all the trees in Switzerland. The collection has had its current name since 1989. After a book “Baumzeit” (Werd Verlag) published by her and Bernd Steiner in 1995 triggered exhibitions in Switzerland and Germany, the IBA moved into the Villa Rosenberg near Winterthur to set up a museum.

Verena Eggmann Steiner died shortly after moving into the new house. Her husband, Bernd Steiner, subsequently took over the project and opened a museum in the villa in 1995 and later expanded the collection in collaboration with his future wife, Silvia Haubensak. In 1999 the IBA became a foundation under the supervision of the Swiss Federal Council .

At the end of September 2007, the museum had to be closed because there were no longer enough donations and subsidies and the city of Winterthur and the canton of Zurich refused to provide any support. Around 40,000 people have visited the museum during its existence.

Finally, on January 1, 2015, the IBA was transferred to the Naturama Aargau collection in Aarau.
