International year of fresh water

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Year of Freshwater ( International Year of Freshwater ) 2003 was by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on 12. December 2002 proclaimed. The background to this is the undersupply of large parts of mankind with clean drinking water and the lack of sanitary facilities.

According to the UNESCO World Water Report of February 25, 2003, 1.1 billion people, around a sixth of the world's population at the time, had no access to clean water. For around 40% of people, there was no adequate disposal of wastewater. 80% of the diseases in the developing countries went back to these unsanitary conditions.

The German kick-off event for the Water Year took place on March 6, 2003. One of the most important events of this year in this context is likely to have been the third World Water Forum in March 2003, which took place in Japan .
