history

The state monopoly travel agency for foreign foreign visitors in the Soviet Union not only carried out the trips of foreign tourists to the USSR , but also most of the foreign trips of Soviet tourists who, from February 23, 1967, without a visa to Romania , Bulgaria , Hungary , the ČSSR and the GDR could visit. This was officially announced by Intourist at the time. Intourist employees also looked after those from the GDR who were looking for relaxation in Soviet health resorts .

In the GDR, too, Intourist was the owner and operator of many good hotels and restaurants due to occupation law , but almost all of them were handed over or sold to the GDR's state enterprise HO in 1951 . The Berlin Hotel Newa at Invalidenstrasse 115, on the other hand, was managed by Intourist until the 1970s.

In East Berlin , the company received a larger office complex in a new building near the Soviet embassy on Unter den Linden at the corner of Glinkastrasse.

Intourist was also the owner and manager of holiday complexes, coaches, maintained hiking trails and issued badges.

Today, in addition to 144 travel agencies, Intourist operates many hotels, most of which are only called “Hotel Intourist”, including the Hotel Peking in Moscow . The company is organized as a joint stock company. The main shareholder was initially the Russian conglomerate Sistema . The Thomas Cook Group announced on November 25, 2010 that it would take over 50.1 percent of Intourist's tour operator business for up to 45 million dollars. Intourist took over completely over the next few years.
