Life and accomplishments

Brodsky attended Brighton High School until 1988 and then studied at New York University and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism .

Irene Taylor Brodsky started out as a photographer until she joined a film team as a location photographer in 1990 while shooting a documentary about the Cree . In the early 1990s she also spent five years on a photography project and subsequent filming in Kathmandu , Nepal . After the publication of the illustrated book Buddhas in Disguise about disabled people in the Himalayas , she approached the aid organization UNICEF to film her material, which ultimately resulted in the half-hour film Ishara .

In the following years she worked on a number of other documentaries that dealt with topics such as polygamy or the American health system. She also began to work as a producer for documentaries. In 2004, the documentary Heart of the Country about the American architect Samuel Mockbee, in which Brodsky was involved as a producer, won an Emmy .

In 2007 she made the documentary Hear and Now , for which she also wrote the script and was responsible for sound editing, camera and production in addition to directing. The film is about her parents, Paul and Sally Taylor, who were both born deaf and decided to have a cochlear implant at the age of 65 . Hear and Now , Brodsky's first feature-length documentary, won the Audience Award for Best Documentary when it was screened at Sundance Film Festival , and other awards, including the Peabody Award , followed.

Eventually she was approached by Google's charitable department to make a film about efforts to fight polio because they wanted to raise public awareness of it. This is how the short documentary film The Final Inch came about under her direction , for which she shot in India and Afghanistan , among others . After the film was released in 2009, she was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Documentary Short along with producer Tom Grant , but could not prevail against Megan Mylan , who received the award for her film Smile Pinki .

In 2011 she made another film, Saving Pelican 895 , in which she documented the rescue of a pelican after the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico . The environmental organization International Bird Rescue then presented her with the Every Bird Matters Award for the attention she paid to an individual animal and the associated reference to the importance of each individual life. The film was also nominated for the Environmental Media Award.

Her short documentary One Last Hug (… and a few smooches): Three Days at Grief Camp , which deals with children who have lost family members and are therefore in a “grief camp” near Los Angeles , was released in 2013 and performed at the Hamptons International Film Festival, where it won an Audience Award.

Irene Taylor Brodsky has since started her own production company, Vermilion Pictures. With this she is working on another full-length film entitled Four Walls Around Me .
