Career
Isaac Hiester came from the important Hiester family in Pennsylvania. He was the son of William Hiester (1790-1853) and a cousin of Hiester Clymer (1827-1884), both of whom were Congressmen. Other relatives also held higher offices at the state and federal level. He attended Yale College until 1842 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1845, he began to work in Lancaster in this profession. Between 1848 and 1851 he was a district attorney in Lancaster County. Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party .
In the 1852 congressional elections , Hiester was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the ninth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Jehu Glancy Jones on March 4, 1853 . Since he was not confirmed in 1854, he could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1555 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .
After his time in the US House of Representatives ended, Hiester practiced law again. Politically, he turned to the Democratic Party after the dissolution of the Whigs . In 1856 he ran unsuccessfully to return to Congress; in July 1868 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York . He died in Lancaster on February 6, 1871.
