Islam Jachjajewitsch Timursijew ( Russian Ислам Яхьяевич Тимурзиев ; born January 9, 1983 in Nazran , Ingushetia , Soviet Union ; † August 31, 2015 there ) was a Russian amateur boxer who became European super heavyweight champion in 2006.

career

The 1.86 m tall super heavyweight boxed since 1996. He was considered a powerful and technically good offensive boxer who had poor coverage and sometimes had stamina problems. His first international success was the victory at the European Championships of the age group of cadets (U-17) in Baku in 1999. In 2001 he won the Russian Junior Championships and also secured the super heavyweight title at the Junior European Championships in Sarajevo .

In 2003 he finished third in the Russian championship and won the title at the military world championships in Catania . In 2004 his compatriot Alexander Powetkin became professional and Timursijew became Russian champion and in the following year in Moscow with the Russian national relay World Cup winner. He won his final duel there with the Olympic champion Odlanier Solís just on points.

After he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which was initially successfully treated, he returned to the ring in 2006 and took part in the European Championship in Plovdiv . He reached the final after victories against the Italian Roberto Cammarelle and the Bulgarian Kubrat Pulew . In the final battle he won on points against the Finn Robert Helenius . In the final of the 2006 World Cup in Baku he lost prematurely to the Cuban Solís, and in 2007 he surprisingly lost at the Russian Championships to Denis Sergejew (19:22).

In 2007 he was nominated as the Russian representative for the World Championships in Chicago , where he easily reached the semi-finals as a favorite and thus qualified for participation in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing . In his semi-final fight against Roberto Cammarelle, however, he was unable to compete because of acute appendicitis and so had to be satisfied with third place.

On August 31, 2015, Timursiev died of complications from sepsis , presumably in connection with the treatment of his recurrent brain tumor at the age of 32.
