Istanbul Kadısı

Istanbul Kadısı or popularly also Istanbul Efendisi was the title of the person in the Ottoman Empire who was also mayor of Istanbul up to the city wall and chief judge. This double office existed from 1453 to 1855. After this time until 1922 the Istanbul Kadı was only a higher judge.

The first Istanbul Kadı is said to have been a great-great-grandson of Nasreddin Hocas , his name was Hızır Bey Çelebi . The Kadıköy district is said to be named after Hızır Bey, who is said to have lived there.
