István Arató (composer)

István Arató [ ˈiʃtvaːn ˈɒrɒtoː ] (born February 9, 1910 in Zagreb ; † March 8, 1980 in Leimbach in the canton of Thurgau in Switzerland ) was a Hungarian composer.

Arató studied in Budapest with Zoltán Kodály as well as in Berlin and Zurich . During the Second World War he emigrated to Switzerland. He went on extensive study trips and directed the Conservatory of Algiers from 1965 to 1966 . Finally he settled in Zurich, where he founded the improvisation ensemble Inspirati and has been teaching at the arts and crafts school since 1968.

Arató's works revolve around the theme of improvisation and contain elements of aleatory . He composed works for cimbal and various accompanying instruments, a transmutation on a prelude by François Couperin , the ensemble improvisation structure , piano and violin pieces, seven original poems for solo voice and psalms .
