description

Vegetative characteristics

Itzaea sericea is a large, woody liana that reaches lengths of over 15 m. The trunks are dense and finely haired with silky hair. The leaves have 1.5 to 3.5 cm long petioles and 7 to 13 cm long and 3.5 to 6.5 cm wide, elliptically elongated or elliptically ovate, entire leaf blades . Towards the front they are blunt to tapering to a point, at the base they are slightly heart-shaped to pointed. The upper side of the leaves is hairless, the underside is densely hairy, shiny and silky.

Inflorescences and flowers

The individually in the axils standing inflorescences are cymes shaped and consist of few to many flowers . The inflorescence stalks are very short, the flower stalks are 3 to 4 mm long. The sepals are about 4 mm long, slightly different in length and almost round. The outside is silky hairy, the inside is hairless. The small, green crown has a length of 1 cm and is bell-shaped, weakly five-lobed and silky hairy on the outside. The stamens start in the corolla tube and protrude slightly beyond the corolla. The stamens are elongated and slightly broadened at the base. The anthers are elongated. The ovary is unilocular, forms four ovules and is hairy matted. The two styles are short and have two large, spherical-head-shaped scars .

Fruits and seeds

The fruits are almost spherical capsules that reach a diameter of about 13 mm and are hairless. They are slightly lignified, have a dry pericarp and initially spring up from the top with three or four flaps, later they divide into a multitude of straight, lengthways segments that are reminiscent of the staves of a barrel. The three to four seeds are hairless and are surrounded by a bright red pulp.

distribution

The species is distributed in Central America and is known there from Mexico, Guatemala , Belize , from the Atlantic coast of Honduras and from Nicaragua.

Botanical history and etymology

The species was first described in 1931 by Paul Carpenter Standley with the name Lysiostyles sericea . The genus Itzaea was established in 1944 by Standley and Julian Alfred Steyermark with Itzaea sericea as the only species. The name of the genus is derived from the Itzá -Mayas.

Systematics

Within the bindweed family, the genus is provisionally classified in the tribe of Cresseae according to molecular biological knowledge .
