Ivan Roitt

Ivan Maurice Roitt (born September 30, 1927 ) is a British immunologist who is a pioneer in autoimmune diseases .

Roitt first studied chemistry from 1949 at the University of Leeds and from 1950 at Oxford ( Balliol College ) with a doctorate degree ( D.Phil. ) In 1953. 1953 followed a bachelor’s degree in physiology. In the same year he moved to Middlesex Hospital Medical School . 1968 to 1992 he was Professor and Head of the Faculty of Immunology at University College London (formerly Middlesex Hospital Medical School), where he was reader from 1965 . From 1973 to 1992 he was head of the department for rheumatology research. He has been Professor Emeritus since 1994. He is the director of the Center for Investigative and Diagnostic Oncology .

In the mid-1950s at Middlesex Hospital with Peter Campbell and Deborah Doniach he recognized the character of Hashimoto's thyroiditis as an autoimmune disease and, in general, the concept of organ-specific autoimmune diseases. In collaboration with Doniach, he also researched pernicious anemia and primary biliary cirrhosis as autoimmune diseases. He is the author of a widely published textbook on immunology in the UK.

In 1964 he received the Canada Gairdner International Award . In 1983 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society . He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (1993) and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians . In 1974 he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists .

In 1968 he received a D.Sc. Oxford University.
