Ivo Hajnal

Ivo Hajnal (* 1961 in Zurich ) is an Austrian Indo-Europeanist , classical philologist , Mycenaeologist and politician .

biography

Hajnal studied Indo-European Linguistics and Classical Philology at the University of Zurich , among others with the Indo-European Ernst Risch . He completed his studies in 1985 with a master's thesis on the oldest Cretan inscriptions. The doctorate took place in 1990 also in Zurich with a dissertation on the Mycenaean case system , the habilitation there in 1995 with a treatise on vocalism in Lycian .

Hajnal then held a visiting professorship at the Humboldt University in Berlin , and then from 1998 to 2001 a full professorship for linguistics at the University of Münster . Since spring 2001 he has been professor of linguistics at the University of Innsbruck , and from October 2005 he was chairman of the Senate, succeeding Christian Smekal . In October 2019, Walter Obwexer succeeded him as Senate Chairman.

Hajnal is a co-founder of the Swiss Text Academy based in Davos , of which he chairs the board of trustees. Since September 2018 he has also been a member of the Board of Trustees of Luwian Studies , based in Zurich, of which Eberhard Zangger is President.

In the elections to the Austrian National Council in 2019 , Hajnal is running as the top candidate for an electoral alliance made up of alternative lists, the Austrian Communist Party and the independent left.

Research priorities

In the field of historical linguistics, Hajnal works on syntax and language contact , on the Near Eastern and Aegean languages ​​of the Bronze Age , on language history and writing and on various Indo-European language branches ( Anatolian , Baltic , Greek , Indo-Iranian , Tocharic ), also in connection with ancient science disciplines . He is also posthumously editing the unpublished grammar of Mycenaean Greek by his teacher Ernst Risch.

In the field of applied linguistics to Hajnal dealing with issues of language use in the corporate communications and corporate publishing .
