Ixcanul - Dreams at the foot of the volcano (original title: Ixcanul Volcano ) is an indigenous film by Jayro Bustamante from 2015. It is about a young Maya woman who wants to escape the cramped conditions of her life.

It tells the story of a family of agricultural workers belonging to the Maya ethnic group Cakchiquel on the slope of the Ixcanul volcano.

The daughter María of the couple Juana and Manuel is about to be married, but she longs for a life beyond the volcano and gives herself to the plantation worker Pepe, who raves about his plans to emigrate.

The director Jayro Bustamante grew up in the Departamento Chimaltenango region and organized workshops on the conception of the film.

The main actresses in the film are amateur actresses from the indigenous community in Panajachel .

In the film, various scenes with domestic pigs are shown, which accompany the action on a symbolic level: a copulation forced with rum, a scene of slaughter, a scene in which the daughter takes care of the piglets.

The film premiered on February 7, 2015 at the Berlin International Film Festival , where it was the first Guatemalan film to compete for the Golden Bear . He won the Silver Bear ( Alfred Bauer Prize ) for new perspectives.

The film was also nominated for the Amnesty Film Prize.

In the conference of the Berlinale festival it is said that Ixcanul is “not a film about indigenous culture, but was developed from it”. The action takes on "the rhythm of a life that is determined by the beliefs and traditions of the ancestors". The RBB ruled that the film tells an "authentically told story that is convincing despite some dramaturgical weaknesses". The film review of the Tagesspiegel particularly emphasized the "impressive appearance" of the leading actress María Mercedes Coroy and the portrayal of María Telón as her mother.
