József Reményi (medalist)
József Reményi (born January 23, 1887 in Košice , Austria-Hungary , † December 25, 1977 in Budapest , Hungary ) was a Hungarian sculptor and medalist .
Live and act
József Reményi attended a school for industrial design from 1902 to 1905 and then worked in Ede Telcs ' studio , where he was also introduced to the work of Adolf von Hildebrand . In 1907 he visited Italy ; In 1909, on Hildebrand's advice, he went to Georg Roemer's studio in Munich for three months .
As a sculptor, he created the bronze statue A súlydobó ( shot putter ) (1912) and the female nudes Női akt , Női akt 1 and Álló női akt .
Reményi became particularly well known as a medalist. He designed around 2000 commemorative and current coins , medals and plaques . One of his first works was the bronze plaque Kalotaszeg with four women in folk costumes from the Transylvanian region of Kalotaszeg (1908). Other works were Aurora (1913, minted in silver and bronze), the Kötözőhely iron plaque ( dressing station , 1916) and commemorative medals on the 100th anniversary of the death of Ludwig van Beethoven (1927) and the 150th birthday of Ignaz Semmelweis (1968). In 1948 he designed a series for the 100th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution in 1848/1849 with a portrait of Sándor Petőfi , which was issued in 5, 10 and 20 forints .
József Reményi taught in several institutions, such as in 1919 with Béni Ferenczy , from 1928 to 1943 at the school for industrial design and from 1932 to 1943 at a vocational school. From 1943, he succeeded Lajos Berán as artistic director of the State Mint. He retired in 1948.
In 2012, on the occasion of the 125th birthday of József Reményi , the Hungarian National Bank issued a collector's coin with a face value of 5000 forints.
