Joerg-Dietrich Hoppe (* 24. October 1940 in Thorn in West Prussia ; † 7. November 2011 in Cologne ) was a German physician , president of the North Rhine Medical Association and president of the German Medical Association and the German Medical .

Live and act

Towards the end of the war, the Hoppes family managed to flee from East to West Germany. Jörg-Dietrich Hoppe lost an eye in a bomb attack. After studying medicine at the University of Cologne from 1960 to 1965, he initially worked for two years as a medical assistant and as an assistant doctor in internal medicine and continued his education in the fields of pathology and general medicine . He then became senior physician for pathology in Solingen and Düren , and from 1982 to 2006 he was chief physician of the Institute for Pathology at the Düren hospital, whose medical director he became. In addition, Hoppe was a professor at the Institute for Forensic Medicine and an honorary professor at the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne.

In 1979 Hoppe was elected as the successor to Karsten Vilmar as the first chairman of the Marburger Bund . He held this office until 1989. He was succeeded by Frank Ulrich Montgomery . The delegates of the 102nd German Medical Association in Cottbus in 1999 elected Hoppe as President of the German Medical Association and the German Medical Association. At the 106th German Doctors 'Conference in 2003 in Cologne and at the 110th German Doctors' Conference in 2007 in Münster , he was confirmed in his office. According to Hoppes, the goals of his term of office until 2011 were to improve patient care, make rationing transparent and the fight for freelance doctors. He “was against the spirit of the times” and resisted the “economization” of medicine: “Doctors are not merchants, patients are not customers”. The 71-year-old Hoppe was no longer available for a new term as President of the German Medical Association from 2011. His successor Montgomery certified him, "a credible representative of the medical profession was". With his participation, the Dialogue Forum Pluralism in Medicine was established in autumn 2000, which was intended to promote cooperation and critical dialogue between conventional and complementary medicine within the medical profession.

Hoppe had also been President of the North Rhine Medical Association since 1993. He was re-elected for this office for five years in 2009.

Hoppe was married. The marriage resulted in two daughters and a son. Hoppe played the violin in the family circle and also in the Düsseldorf doctors' orchestra.
