Jörg Oberste

Jörg Oberste (born September 13, 1967 ) is a German historian .

Jörg Oberste studied history, German and Romance languages ​​in Münster . He received his doctorate with Gert Melville with the work Visitation and Order Organization . From 1994 he was a research assistant at the Chair for Medieval History at the Technical University of Dresden . In Dresden he worked at the Collaborative Research Center 537 “Institutionality and Historicity” in the project “Institutional Structures of Religious Orders”. In 2000/2001 he completed his habilitation on the subject of religiosity and the social advancement of urban elites in the high Middle Ages at the TU Dresden . Oberste has been teaching as professor for medieval history and historical auxiliary sciences at the University of Regensburg since the 2004/05 winter semester .

His research focuses on religious orders , late medieval city history , high and late medieval economic theories, the crusades and the history of the heresies . Oberste worked on the religiosity of urban elites in Toulouse in the 12th and 13th centuries. In 2003 he presented a description of the Albigensian Crusade . Oberste is considered to be one of the best experts on the history of the Cistercian order . In 2014 he published an overview of the history of this order from its beginnings to the present day. According to Oberste, the success of the Cistercians lies in the "interplay of charismatic mission and rational planning."
