Jürgen Becker (lawyer)

Jürgen Becker (born July 31, 1944 in Silesia ) is a lawyer and was on the board of the Society for Musical Performance and Mechanical Reproduction Rights (GEMA) until July 31, 2009 . Before that, Becker was the spokesman for the board of GEMA until December 31, 2006.

Career

Jürgen Becker studied law at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . In 1966 he became a member of the Corps Rhenania Freiburg . He holds an LL.M. at Princeton University . He then received his doctorate and habilitation in Freiburg. This was followed by the appointment as professor for public law, international law and European law at the University of Freiburg. Becker is a member of the board of directors of the Institute for Copyright and Media Law and editor of the magazine for copyright and media law and the judicial service of this magazine.

Between 1987 and 1990, Becker was legal adviser of the Association of German Book Trade . From 1990 he held the position of general counsel at GEMA and was appointed to the GEMA board in 1998. In 2000 he became deputy chairman of the board of GEMA. Until December 31, 2006 he was the spokesman for the GEMA board. The office of CEO of GEMA has been taken over by Harald Heker (formerly full-time managing director of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels ) since January 1st, 2007 .

In addition, Jürgen Becker has been Vice President of GESAC (Groupement Européen des Sociétés d'Auteurs et Compositeurs, Brussels) and President of the BIEM Management Committee ( Bureau International des Sociétés gérant les Droits d'Enregistrement et de Reproduction Mécanique , Paris) since 2005
