Jürgen Dummer

Jürgen Dummer (born May 25, 1935 in Kolberg , † October 7, 2011 in Berlin ) was a German classical scholar .

Life

Jürgen Dummer studied Classical Philology at the Humboldt University in Berlin and after graduating in 1957 worked as a research assistant at the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin . Here he worked for the Church Fathers Commission for thirty years . With the dissertation Epiphanius von Constantia: Studies on the formal foundations of his education he received his doctorate in 1965 at the Humboldt University. In 1988 he received his PhD B as Dr. sc. phil. at the Humboldt University. In 1989 he received the Winckelmann Medal from the city of Stendal. After the political changehe continued to work as a lecturer at the Humboldt University until he was appointed professor for Greek studies at the University of Jena in 1994 . He taught here until the summer of 2000 when he retired. Even after that he held lectures and other courses in Jena until the 2010/11 winter semester and took part in the life of the Institute for Classical Studies.

Dummer was a full member and, since 1990, Vice-President and Senator of the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt . Since 1996 he has been a member of the New York Academy of Sciences .

He is buried in cemetery IV of St. Hedwig and the St. Pius parish in Berlin-Alt-Hohenschönhausen.
