Jürgen Kunow (born February 13, 1953 in Greifswald ) is a German prehistoric archaeologist .

Jürgen Kunow studied prehistory and early history , ancient and medieval history , Near Eastern archeology , Roman provincial archeology and European ethnology in Berlin , Freiburg and Marburg . In Marburg Kunow was in 1980 with a thesis on " The Roman imports in the Germania libera " doctorate . In the years from 1981 to 1992 he was first as a scientific consultant at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn and at the Rheinisches Amt für Bodendenkmalpflegeworked in the area of ​​large-scale excavations, then as department head for monument protection , finally as deputy head of the department. Here he gave courses on the activities of the state archeology and the archaeological museum as well as on the prehistory and early history of Brandenburg. In the summer of 2004 he replaced Harald Koschik as head of the Rhenish Office for Ground Monument Preservation in Bonn and thus also became a state archaeologist for the Rhineland. In this position he held one of the most prestigious positions in German archaeological research. On December 18, 2018, Kunow retired. The prehistoric archaeologist Erich Claßen was appointed as his successor on January 1, 2019 . From 2003 to 2015, Kunow was Dieter Planck's successor, Chairman of the Association of State Archaeologists in the Federal Republic of Germany , followed by Michael Rind . Kunow is a lecturer at the Institute for Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archeology at the University of Bonn .

Kunow's main research areas are conservation strategies and research concepts in regional archeology, the conveyance of archaeological content in museums, the work structures and legal regulations for the preservation of monuments in Europe, as well as the research history of the subject of prehistory and early history. In addition, Kunow is engaged in the archaeological prognosis project, the reconstruction of prehistoric and early historical settlement behavior and anthropogenic landscape design.

Kunow is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute , a member of the Brandenburg Historical Commission and the Commission for Research into Collections of Archaeological Finds and Archives in Northeast Central Europe and was a member of the Numismatic Commission of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany .
