Jürgen Podzkiewitz

Jürgen Podzkiewitz (born May 13, 1954 in Alsfeld ) is a German filmmaker and director.

Professional activities

After studying at the State College for Optics and Photo Technology in Berlin, Podzkiewitz started as a clapper / loader with Uli Edels Christiane F. - We children from Bahnhof Zoo and then as a camera assistant with Heinz Pehlke, Michael Marszalek and others. From 1988 Podzkiewitz began making his own films and documentaries. His film: The Last Smoker was a German competition entry at the Berlinale in 1988 and the first German film to be shown at the renowned United States Sundance Festival (1990).

In 1992 he was trapped in the riot in Rostock-Lichtenhagen with the ZDF journalists Dietmar Schumann and Thomas Euting and over 100 Vietnamese in the local sunflower house and shot the dramatic images of their escape from the burning house, images that went around the world. The ZDF team was awarded the Carl von Ossietzky Medal of the International League for Human Rights and the IG Medien prize of honor.

On March 24, 1993, Podzkiewitz visited the astronomer Eugene Shoemaker on Mount Palomar and accidentally filmed the discovery of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 , which collided with Jupiter in July 1994 . Podzkiewitz made around 20 documentaries before finally switching to directing. As a director, he supervised more than 1000 television programs and also lectured at the TFH Berlin in the camera department. After an interlude on the Caribbean island of Curaçao ( Netherlands Antilles ) from 2005 to 2008, Podzkiewitz has lived and worked in Switzerland since 2009.

In 2018, Podzkiewitz criticized the German government's policy in the context of the refugee crisis and signed the 2018 Joint Declaration .
