Jürgen Reents (born August 5, 1949 in Bremerhaven ) is a German politician and journalist . Reents was editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Neues Deutschland until 2012 .

Life

As a student, Reents joined the Young Democrats and in 1969 became a member of the Bremen DJD state board. After graduating from high school and doing community service , he became involved in the extra-parliamentary opposition and began studying mathematics. He converted to the Communist League . Here he became editor of the organ workers' struggle and also wrote for it. At the end of the 1970s he was one of the founding members of the Greens . Via the list of the Hamburg Green Alternative List (GAL), he moved into the Bundestag as a member of the first Green parliamentary group in the 1983 federal election ; until he left the Bundestag in 1985, he belonged to the eco-socialist wing of the Green parliamentary group.

With his attempt to bring the Greens, who were unsuccessful in the federal election in 1990, closer to the East German Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS), he almost split his party. When he failed, he left the Greens in 1991 and became press spokesman for the PDS Bundestag group that same year . He did not join the party until 1998.

In 1999 he exchanged positions with the previous editor-in-chief of the newspaper Neues Deutschland (ND), Reiner Oschmann : Oschmann became PDS press spokesman, Reents ND editor-in-chief. He got involved in a renewal course for the newspaper to remove the image of the former GDR propaganda leaflet and to open it up to new readers. From August 1, 2012, Tom Strohschneider was co-editor-in-chief. Jürgen Reents resigned as editor-in-chief of the ND at the end of 2012, but remained with the newspaper as a consultant to the editorial management and editor with special tasks until the end of November 2014.

Jürgen Reents lives and works in Berlin .
