The J. F. Hillebrand forwarding company was founded on July 1, 1844 by the 25-year-old Johann Friedrich Hillebrand (1819–1890) as a freight commission business with loading and unloading service and an associated customs agency. It is the world's largest wine and beverage freight forwarder.

history

In the middle of the 19th century, with the romanticism of the Rhine , the wine trade in Mainz also flourished again. Johann Friedrich Hillebrand acquired Leichter for river transport and thus continued the inland shipping business of his ancestors. The Mainz – Ludwigshafen railway line, which was reopened in 1853, and the left-hand Rhine line built in 1859 were the basis for the expansion of the business to include the railways and the inclusion of the eastern markets. 1875 was followed by the sons-generation Dionis and Ludwig Damian Hillebrand and built the Rhine - freight further. In addition to their core business, they took over the Mainz agency for ship passages on the Hamburg-America Line for the Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft .

After the Second World War, Karl Hillebrand, Dionis' son, began interzonal trade between the French-occupied Mainz zone and the surrounding area to the American-occupied zone in Mainz-Kastel. Jan W. Hillebrand, who had returned from an allied captivity, took over the management of Mainzer Lagerhaus AG, which was incorporated into the Hillebrand forwarding company in 1953.

The forwarding company exported mainly German wines all over the world until the 1960s . From the middle of the decade, more and more standardized containers were used in the logistics business. The sturdy, locked containers offered the advantage that the attractive freight was better protected against transport damage and better against theft. With Hillebrands Wine-Line , this concept was also extended to other classic European wine exporting countries. In 1974 the move to the new company premises in Mainz-Hechtsheim took place. In 1986 Jan W. Hillebrand left the company and handed the business over to Christof J. F. Hillebrand, the fifth generation of the family-run company .

Business area

The business area of the forwarding company J. F. Hillebrand is in the freight traffic with wine and spirits, mainly with North America and Canada but also in the overseas area. When it comes to sea transport, the majority of the work is done with Hapag-Lloyd . J. F. Hillebrand France ( Beaune , Bordeaux ) handles approx. 65% of all French wine exports to the United States of America , 80% of French wine exports to Canada and 70% to Japan.

The company moves 40–50% of its wine imports (based on volume) to Germany. Around a third of this is bulk goods (barrel wine). Pre-packaged goods (bottled goods ) can, for example, be transported in air-conditioned ISO containers (reefers) .

In 2011 the GmbH had 47 offices in 32 countries. According to the company, sales in 2009 amounted to 567 million euros and were thus at the level of before the economic crisis.
