J Mascis , actually Joseph Donald Mascis Jr. (born December 10, 1965 in Amherst , Massachusetts ) is an American musician , best known as the singer and guitarist of the independent band Dinosaur Jr.

Career

Before founding Dinosaur Jr. in 1984, he was a drummer for the group Deep Wound . He turned down an offer to join Nirvana as a drummer . Dinosaur Jr. became one of the pioneers of the American alternative rock scene in the 1980s. After Lou Barlow left the group, Mascis was the only permanent member of the band. In 1996 Mascis released an acoustic solo album Martin & Me . From 2000 he was on the road with J Mascis + The Fog . In 2005 he recorded the album J + Friends Sing + Chant for Amma on, a throwback to the Indian guru Amritanandamayi . 2005 saw the reunion of Dinosaur Jr.

In 2005 Mascis founded the side project "Witch" with Dave Sweetapple and Kyle Thomas. The band is slightly reminiscent of the old sounds of Black Sabbath. Mascis recorded two studio albums with Witch.

In the same year Dinosaur Jr. got back together with the original line-up and played live at several festivals and tours. In 2007 the comeback album Beyond was released , and in 2009 the album Farm .

In 2011 he released his solo album Several Shades of Why . Tied to a Star followed in 2014 .

In 2011, the Rolling Stone listed Mascis as 86th of the 100 best guitarists of all time .
