Jacobo Morales

Jacobo Morales Ramirez (born November 12, 1934 in Lajas , Puerto Rico ) is a Puerto Rican filmmaker, actor and writer.

Life

Morales was already writing pieces for the radio at the age of 14 and could be heard in radio formats. In the 1950s, he began to appear in the new medium of television. He attended the Román Baldorioty de Castro high school in San Juan and then studied theater and drama at the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras . Morales was active as a writer and wrote several plays as well as poems, which were published in various newspapers and magazines and also appeared in anthologies. However, he also worked as an actor and comedian, including in the television formats Jaja Jiji Jojo con Agrelot and Desafiando a los genios . In the 1960s he was part of the comedy group Los Rayos Gamma . He also wrote scripts for comedy formats and television films. In the 1970s, Morales also appeared as an actor in Puerto Rican and American films, including Woody Allen's Bananas (1971). In Irvin Kershner's Sandbox Games, Morales took on the role of Fidel Castro in 1972 .

In 1979 Morales made his directorial debut with Dios los cría and also directed the sequel Dios los cría 2 in 2004. His greatest international success as a director was the love film Don Santiago's late love , which was released in 1989 and was nominated for an Oscar in the category of best foreign language film in 1990. Morales is considered to be one of the greatest Puerto Rican filmmakers of his generation and - alongside Marcos Zurinada - as the central representative of fictional films in Puerto Rico.
